TWENTY-SEVEN

ASH

Saturday came, and I knew it was the deadline for Fox’s demands. He wanted to know what was going on, and I didn’t blame him. I had already run through a thousand scenarios on how to tell them, but each one ended badly in my head. I couldn’t see any possible way this could go right. I knew how serious they all took loyalty and honesty. I didn’t know if this was going to feel like a betrayal or if they would understand.

I was relieved to see Ollie’s name come up as my phone rang. We texted here and there, but he was so busy lately that actually getting a chance to talk to him was always a nice surprise.

“Hey? What’s going on?” I asked, attempting to pick up my apartment while we talked.

“Not a lot today, luckily. What are you up to?”

I gave him the update, telling him about Fox and the crew, along with the fact that I still hadn’t told them who I really was.

“Oh, babe. You have to tell them. You know you shouldn’t have let it go on this long. Plus, what’s wrong with you? Why wouldn’t they be happy to know who you are?”

“Yes, but what if they are too happy about who I am? What if they want to use me for things?”

“I told you years ago to drop all those snobby friends and only hang out with me. They got in your head even now. Not all friends are going to be like that and if, for some reason, they do act like that, you walk away. No, you run away. Be honest, though, do you really think that’s going to happen?”

I thought it over, but it was an easy answer. “No.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you.”

“I said no.”

“Exactly. You need to trust yourself more and do what you know is right. Which, in this case, is telling them the truth. Also, get out of that damn apartment.”

“I have been getting out! And it’s hard to trust yourself when you spend months on end thinking you’ve lost your mind.”

“Yeah, you haven’t been out with me. Nice to know that you’ll run around town with them, but don’t call,” he said. The tone was almost joking, but I know I had been a terrible friend for the last year. “As for losing your mind, that was because of David, not because of you. You are smart. If you think they are good people, they are.”

“Thank you for sticking with me even when I didn’t call. I really do appreciate you not dropping me as a friend.”

“I could never,” he said, and I could almost hear the smile. “I know you went through a lot and I know you needed time, but that’s over. You need to move on with your life.”

“And luckily, I have a smart, wonderful friend to help me do that.”

“A friend that you owe dinner. A nice, fancy dinner.”

“A nice, fancy dinner in my life right now is burgers at the diner.
